Six Nkuringo Children Begin Boarding School Through Gorilla Junction Sponsorship
For more than a decade, the Gorilla Junction Foundation has quietly supported education for children from Nkuringo Village, in the south of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest — helping them stay in school, study safely, and dream beyond the ridges they call home.
In Nkuringo, every project begins with the same belief — that lasting conservation and opportunity start with people. For nearly two decades, the community here has trained local guides, tailors, and storytellers. Each skill learned helps families earn a dignified living from the land they protect.
That same commitment has, year after year, extended to the next generation.
Through our ongoing partnership with Bright Future Primary School, six more children from Nkuringo have joined boarding school this term under the Foundation’s Education Sponsorship Program — a continuing effort that supports around fifteen learners each year.
For these six learners, the move to boarding school means more than a change of classroom — it means stability. No more walking steep, muddy paths each day to reach lessons, or missing class during heavy rains. At Bright Future, they have a safe place to study, nutritious meals, and teachers who can guide them through each term without interruption.
“It’s a relief,” said one parent quietly. “Before, the children walked long distances and came home too tired to read. Now they stay at school — they can focus.”
The Foundation’s team works closely with local council leaders and the school administration to identify children whose families need help keeping them in school. Each sponsorship is personal — covering essentials like uniforms, books, and meals — and ensuring that parents remain involved through regular updates and community meetings.
Education here is a shared effort — families, schools, and partners working side by side to keep children learning and connected to the community that raised them.
At the Robert Brierley Community Centre, where adults learn tailoring, guiding, and photography, the news of their enrollment spread quickly. It gave every trainee and mentor there a quiet sense of progress — proof that learning here reaches beyond the classroom.
For the Foundation, supporting education grows naturally from its skilling work — both strengthen the same families in different stages of life.
Beyond School Walls
At Bright Future Primary School, the days begin early. By sunrise, the compound is already awake — children in blue and purple uniforms sweeping the courtyard, laughter spilling from dormitories, the smell of porridge and woodsmoke in the air.
For the six learners sponsored through the Gorilla Junction Foundation, this daily rhythm is something new: consistent meals, quiet time to study, and the assurance that they can finish each term without disruption.
Every few weeks, their notes arrive at the Robert Brierley Community Centre — written carefully in English, sometimes decorated with sketches of gorillas or flowers. They’re read aloud to the tailoring and guiding trainees who helped fundraise for the sponsorships. They listen proudly, knowing their work, in small ways, helps keep these children in class.
“When you read their letters, you see the change,” says Lydia Mpanga, Director of the Foundation. “They’re growing in confidence. That’s how you know the effort is working.”
In Nkuringo, education isn’t only about classes — it’s about belonging. The children return home during holidays and share what they’ve learned with their families and neighbors. Some teach younger siblings to read; others help with record-keeping at the local shop or clinic. Learning multiplies quietly, one household at a time.
Help Keep Them in Class
Each term, the Foundation and Bright Future Primary School review progress and renew sponsorships. Together, they identify new learners for the coming year.
The goal isn’t numbers — it’s continuity. Keeping children in school means keeping hope steady.
The Education Sponsorship Fund now supports close to fifteen children annually. With more partners and travelers joining the effort, that number can grow — and so can the reach of learning.
